Standing Out?
This is going to be a bit of a rambling post, so bear with me. Standing out from the crowd in an S13 chassis is no easy task these days. Just about any idea you can come up with, whether it’s combining aero from different makers or crazy 3-color paint fades, has been done. Until recently, I thought a Uras GT aero would do the trick, but I keep seeing more S13s with that kit popping up.
I’ve had this pretty rare D-Max Type 2 front bumper literally laying around for a few years now. I always liked it, but I haven’t had any luck finding the matching skirts, so I never seriously considered running it. However, the more I looked at these pictures from a year ago, the more it grew on me.
I also noticed that the PS Duce skirts that came with the Onevia actually work with the front bumper fairly well. Definitely not as well as D-Max Type 2 skirts would, but enough to hold me over until I finally locate some D-Max skirts.
I’ve been pretty indecisive about the fenders as well. At first, I planned to keep running the D-Max D1-Spec front fenders the Onevia came with combined with Origin Type-2 rears. I went so far as ordering the rears from Touge Factory and test fitting them. However, the more I saw the new Origin Type 4 (+75mm) rears, the more I wanted them. So, the Type-2 rears came off and ended up on Eric’s (@Yamaguchistyle) new street S13. I ended up scoring a pair of Type-4 Origin rears off Yahoo Auctions for about $150. I’m just waiting for them to arrive.
The D-Max fronts definitely wouldn’t look right with big Origin rears, so those came off as well. Ideally I would have gotten the Type-4 Origin fronts as well, but I just so happened to have a pair of Type-3 fronts that I picked up at UpGarage last year for like $40. They’re not as wide at +55mm, but they’ll work. One thing I definitely did not like about them was the double vent so I ended up doing some cutting to make it a single vent. I’ll be putting together a post covering the process of modifying the fronts down the road.
One bit I’m still unsure about is the rear spoiler. I have a few to chose from, including a Spirit-Rei (pictured above), a carbon Origin, and D-Max. The Spirit-Rei is the best looking of the three trunk spoilers I have, but it might look weird sitting on a carbon trunk if I paint it to match the car.
I wouldn’t have to paint the carbon Origin spoiler, but the weave doesn’t match the trunk, which I know will get on my nerves. I’ve also considered a GT-wing with wide stands that come off the top of the rear fenders instead of the trunk lid, but I’ve talked so much shit about GT-wings it would just make me a hypocrite. In the end, I probably won’t make a final decision until I paint the car.
The Onevia came with a factory rear bumper and Spirit-Rei diffuser. It’s a look I really like and want to keep. Unfortunately I exploded the Spirit-Rei diffuser at Hadashi years ago, so I ended up buying an RE Amemiya style diffuser I’m going to modify with the help of composite wiz Drake Bianski (@drak3ing) to look a bit more unique.
Before I wrap this post up, I should mention the hood situation. The Onevia came with a BN-Sports FRP hood, which I traded for a D-Max carbon hood. That hood is now on JohnK’s gorgeous !80SX (@johnkimshi). I’m now on the hunt for a cheap factory hood for a couple of reasons. The first is the fact I want some factory metal up front to align the fenders and bumper to. The second is a nifty modification I saw an S15 owner in Japan make to his hood, which I want to copy. I’ll detail that in a blog post down the road…
